RSI Leadership Rehab Rounds: Dr. Rochelle Furtado
"When Recovery Comes Home: Gender Differences in Participation in Upper Extremity Stroke Rehabilitation"
Dr. Rochelle Furtado, MPT, PhD
Postdoctoral Researcher | RELEARN Lab, University of Toronto
Dr. Rochelle Furtado is a physiotherapist and postdoctoral researcher with the RELEARN Lab at the KITE Research Institute. She previously completed her physiotherapy training and PhD at Western University, where she was awarded the Governor General's Gold Medal for her work. Currently, her reserach focuses on improving rehabilitation outcomes for women after stroke. Her research is funded by a Heart and Stroke Postdoctoral Fellowship under the mentorship of Dr. Kara Patterson and centers on developing co-designed rehabilitation programs to improve participation to upper limb home-based stroke rehabilitation—a critical area given the high prevalence of upper limb impairment among stroke survivors and its impact on activities of daily living and quality of life. Through co-design methodology, she currently explores the use of home-based functional electrical stimulation with women to enhance engagement and accessibility of upper limb rehabilitation beyond the clinical setting. Her contributions have been recognized with awards for her presentations and posters at national stroke research summits.
Leadership Rehab Rounds (LRR), hosted by the Rehabilitation Sciences Institute, is an initiative that brings together students, postdoctoral researchers, faculty and invited external experts to share detailed information about their completed projects, comprehensive research programs and current events topical for rehabilitation science
