The Rehabilitation Sciences Institute (RSI) prides itself on cultivating leadership not only across healthcare and the rehabilitation sciences, but also within its own student community. This year, RSI is honoured to celebrate Ashvene Sureshkumar, one of the recipients of the University of Toronto Student Leadership Award (UTSLA),a distinction recognizing students who demonstrate exceptional leadership, community engagement, and meaningful impact across the university.
Ashvene’s leadership has left an indelible mark on the RSI community, from her commitment to shaping inclusive spaces to her involvement in initiatives that strengthen academic and social connections among students. Her achievements reflect both her passion for advocacy and the collaborative spirit that defines RSI.
Ashvene shared that her motivation stems from a deep commitment to equity and community-building. As co‑lead of the READII (Rehabilitation Sciences advancing Equity, Accessibility, Diversity, Indigeneity and Inclusion) Committee, she focused on creating spaces where systemic barriers in education and research can be openly addressed. “This role allowed me to collaborate with faculty, staff and students to advocate for equity-focused initiatives within the Rehabilitation Sciences Institute,”she said.
Her leadership also extends to student governance. Through her work with the Rehabilitation Sciences Graduate Student Union (RSGSU),including serving as Co‑President in 2023 and Academic Affairs Representative for PhD students, Ashvene has helped ensure student voices are represented in key academic decisions. “I was motivated by a desire to advocate for my peers, ensuring that their perspectives were represented,” she reflected.
Looking ahead, Ashvene hopes her contributions will help build a more inclusive and supportive community: “I hope this work contributes to reducing systemic barriers and creating unified spaces where all members of the University community feel valued and empowered to succeed.”
She credits RSI for shaping her leadership path, emphasizing how mentorship and encouragement played a transformative role.
RSI has consistently been a space where I feel encouraged to step into new roles and share my ideas.
This guidance, she says, has inspired her to lead with purpose and confidence.
Her message to future students is simple but powerful: “Follow what you are passionate about and embrace every opportunity to learn. Leadership and meaningful change often begin with a genuine interest and curiosity.”
Ashvene’s recognition highlights the remarkable ways RSI students enrich and strengthen our community. We are immensely proud of her accomplishments and grateful for the positive energy and commitment that students like her bring to our institute each year. Her achievement adds to the ongoing story of engagement, collaboration, and student leadership within RSI.
