ICDR Presents: Occupational Security – A Holistic Values-Based Framework for Supporting Occupations and Safety

In today's world, marked by a confluence of global crises—including climate change, armed conflicts, and the COVID-19 pandemic— access to security faces increasing challenges. These crises, which often intertwine, exacerbate risks and limitations, particularly impacting the most vulnerable and marginalized groups, including persons with disabilities. These impacts frequently lead to severe consequences like poverty and homelessness, directly tied to issues of security.

Our work introduces the concept of occupational security as a comprehensive framework for addressing the safety and security concerns of individuals and communities affected by both local and global crises. Occupational security also considers persistent, interconnected threats such as racism, poverty, inadequate housing, and colonization.

Expanding beyond traditional human-centric views, this approach incorporates the well-being of non-humans within its scope. Challenging the individualistic orientation of neoliberal security paradigms, occupational security advocates for a collectivist approach based on values such as sustainability, justice, peace, compassion, authenticity and accuracy. This framework not only aims to enrich occupational science scholarship but also seeks to foster collaboration across diverse disciplines to address multifaceted security issues comprehensively. Authors: Farrukh A.
