Media Relations 101 Workshop
Do you have an important story to share about your research and want to engage a wider audience... but don’t know how or where to start? Then come out to the Toronto Science Policy Network’s free workshop on media relations!
This workshop will feature media training from two Faculty of Medicine communications professionals: Gabrielle Giroday and Liam Mitchell. Our two workshop hosts will walk you through how to make your research more accessible to a general audience and get your message across effectively, including what makes an item newsworthy and how to develop key messages. Please bring along a piece of your research (e.g. a poster, conference or paper abstract) for the workshop activity, which includes a fun pitch slam.
Workshop hosts:
- Gabrielle Giroday is a Media and Communications Specialist at UofT’s Faculty of Medicine. In her role, she works with journalists who want to interview faculty members, and edits UofTMed Magazine, an award-winning publication that goes to alumni. Her favourite part of her job is working with smart, kind people to illuminate substantive work and educate the public.
- Liam Mitchell is the Associate Director of Communications at UofT’s Faculty of Medicine. He holds graduate degrees in journalism and higher education administration. Prior to joining the University of Toronto, he was a journalist with CBC News.
