Presentation Summary:
This is a high-level presentation that will help people to have a foundational understanding of the framework and evidence that underpins the application of psychological first aid in our workplace. It will help people to understand the importance of knowing the signs of distress in themselves and in colleagues and provide them with the key principles of how to enact support. Importantly, this presentation will be centred in the Psychological Safety Standards of the Mental Health Commission of Canada and will help the audience understand how this work can make a contribution to change in culture.
Educational Objectives:
- Become aware of the Mental Health Commission of Canada, and the psychological safety standards, including the shared responsibility to enact these.
- Recognize covert and overt signs of distress in yourself and your colleagues.
- Develop knowledge of the principles of psychological first aid as they apply to health professionals.
- Be aware of how to find and access resources available to support you and your colleagues in times of difficulty.
Biographies:
Julie Maggi, MD, MSc, FRCPC
Director, Faculty Wellness, Temerty Faculty of Medicine
Dr. Julie Maggi is the Director of Faculty Wellness in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto and a Staff Psychiatrist at St. Michael’s Hospital providing CL psychiatry services. She holds an academic appointment of Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry.
She graduated medical school from McMaster University and completed her postgraduate medical training in Psychiatry and a Master of Science (Institute of Medical Science) at the University of Toronto. She also completed fellowships in HIV Psychiatry (University of Toronto), Administrative Psychiatry (Columbia University), and CL Psychiatry (Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai).
Heather Flett, MD, MHPE, FRCPC
Temerty Professor of Learner Wellness
Dr. Heather Flett has been involved in health professions education for many years as a Postgraduate Site Director at CAMH (2009-2013), a Director Postgraduate Wellness UofT (2018-2021), and most recently as the Inaugural Temerty Professor of Learner Wellness at UofT since 2021. Dr. Flett has been consultant psychiatrist at CAMH with the Department of Psychiatry at UofT since 2009. She completed a Masters of Health Professions Education in 2023 and has an academic interest in understanding socio-cultural influences on health professions education and clinical practice. Dr. Flett has been recognized locally and internationally for her education leadership.
McKyla McIntyre, MD, MSc, FRCPC

Dr. McKyla McIntyre is a physiatrist in the Brain and Spinal Cord Program at Toronto Rehabilitation Institute. She holds a full-time clinical academic appointment as an Assistant Professor, Clinician Teacher in the Department of Medicine at the University of Toronto. She completed her residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and obtained her Masters’ degree (MSc) in System Leadership and Innovation from the University of Toronto. She is presently the Wellness Lead for the Division of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of Toronto.
Behdin Nowrouzi-Kia, OT Reg. (Ont.), PhD, FRSA
Assistant Professor, Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy, Temerty Faculty of Medicine
Dr. Behdin Nowrouzi-Kia is an occupational therapist and assistant professor in the Department of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy. He holds the Emily Geldsaler Grant Early Career Professorship in Workplace Mental Health. Using an occupational lens, Dr. Nowrouzi-Kia’s research program systematically studies occupations in workability, work disability prevention, return to work, and disability management. This approach is designed to produce results directly applicable to identifying and assessing risk and develop interventions for preventing/improving and optimizing functioning in the workplace. Dr. Nowrouzi-Kia’s work is motivated by efforts in the field of work disability prevention that extend beyond the efforts to prevent or cure diseases from a purely physical perspective towards more holistic approaches. The major tenets of his work use a biopsychosocial perspective to understand work disability and extend towards incorporating personal characteristics (e.g., psychosocial) and environmental (e.g., healthcare system, workplace, workers’ compensation system) factors in improving health outcomes.
