Doctor's Notes on thestar.ca: Dr. Kristin Musselman on Spinal Cord Injury

Dr. Kristin Musselman has recently been published on thestar.ca. In her article entitled, "Learning to avoid falls is key when rebuilding from spinal cord injury", Musselman talks about the recovery process for those who have suffered from an "incomplete" spinal cord injury.

"Walking is much more complex than putting one foot in front of the other. For people suffering from an “incomplete” spinal cord injury, learning to walk without falling is a challenge. And some might even benefit from actually falling (with safety measures in place) in order to learn how best to avoid it".

The article states that people are most likely to fall in middle age (between 55 and 64 years old), and most commonly during the day, at home, and while walking.

As a physical therapist focused on rehabilitation from spinal cord injuries, Musselman says she is intrigued by research showing that the reasons people in this group fall are different from the reasons people with other conditions — such as multiple sclerosis or post-polio syndrome — fall.
