Good Standing & Satisfactory Progress
You are required to remain in good standing in your graduate program and to make satisfactory progress toward the completion of your degree requirements.
Your eligibility for funding and registration in the program will be affected if you do not remain in good standing or if you do not make satisfactory progress. It is important to meet with your supervisor(s) regularly as well as receive and act upon feedback on your progress and quality of your work.
To maintain good standing, you must:
1. Complete all required courses with a minimum grade performance of B
Students are required to achieve a minimum grade performance of B in all Program required courses. All other elective courses must be completed with a minimum grade performance of B-.
Degree & Course Requirements – MSc Degree & Course Requirements – PhD
2. Submit evidence of your satisfactory research progress via the completion of the Supervisory Committee meeting, every 6 months
To remain in good standing, a documented Supervisory Committee meeting must be held every 6 months, and the meeting form must be submitted to RSI. RSI will keep a record of your research progress for the duration of the program. One unsatisfactory performance will result in losing your good standing status. Two consecutive unsatisfactory ratings will result in consideration for program termination. If you fail to hold a committee meeting within a reasonable timeframe of the required 6 months, this will be considered as an unsatisfactory performance rating.
3. Participate and present at the RSI Research Day
All students are required to attend the annual RSI Research Day in order to remain in good standing. All students must attend annually; PhD students must present a poster or oral presentation in Year 2, 3 and 4. MSc students must present a poster or oral presentation in Year 2. If a student has a valid reason why they cannot attend or present at the RSI Research Day, they should inform the Associate Director and seek approval. Students who are exempted from attending the research day in a given year are still required to submit a poster to the event.
4. Pass the transfer or candidacy and/or final oral examinations
Depending on the program, RSI students will be required to pass a defense or a transfer exam, whereas PhD students will be required to pass a candidacy exam and the oral final examination. The policies for each type of examination are outlines elsewhere.
